Do You Do "Dry January"?
A big trend at the beginning of the new year is to better your health by exercising, eating better, and putting up the booze. I think we are all trying to make up for enjoying the holidays a little too much. And who can blame you? The last two weeks of December can bring so much food, drink & Festivities. I won't lie, I LOVE IT!!
Chris and I have cut out processed foods, no sugar, no dairy, and no booze. We are also intermittent fasting. We limit our food consumption to between 11am until 8pm. I've also been adding in some exercise and yoga, but not as consistently as I should be.
We have been pleased with our progress so far. We've dropped a few pounds and our pants are fitting better. In the beginning, the food part was hard, then there was a good two weeks where we were in the groove and used to it. A little after three weeks, we both had a hankering for a beer... We knew there were some good nonalcoholic beers out there, so we tried a couple.
We've had Athletic Brewing Co. before and knew they were tasty. They have a good line-up of different styles, so there is something for everyone. We went with the IPA because we wanted something flavor-forward. This company knows their beers. The flavor is spot on and could probably fool the casual drinker. Not having any alcohol obviously changes up the flavor, but there's enough going on that you don't really notice it. While we couldn't find it at first in our local grocery stores, we did find some at a local liquor store. The one thing that surprised me was the price. I thought that since there was no alcohol, they would be cheaper than a craft beer, but I was wrong. They are charging a craft beer price.
Our local grocery stores didn't carry them the Athletic brews, so we had find something else. We were looking for something besides the boring originals and came across Just the Haze, by Samuel Adams. The can claims it to be a "hazy, juicy IPA", so we thought it would be a good one to try. We were not disappointed. This NA beer is right on the nose to a hazy IPA, but slightly less "sharp". It doesn't have the zing that the alcohol gives a true beer, but the flavor was great. It scratched our itch for the time being and may drink it again in the future, but for the price, I'd rather drink the real deal.
Since we were trying NA beer, I thought I would give an alcohol-free wine a try. I opted for the FRE Chardonnay, and WOW, it was terrible! I don't know how anyone would think that taste resembled wine?!?! It was so sweet and tasted like apple juice, gross apple juice. I do not recommend. I will not be buying ever again. It was so bad, I'm not even willing to try one of their reds. Be warned, friends.
CHEERS!
